Task: Create a character description of any character you know
Monkey D.Luffy
Childhood: Raised by bandits with his two sworn brothers. Aspires to be pirates with them.
Intelligence: Not very intelligent and quick to anger when he witnesses injustice.
Ethnicity/Accent: He would be brazillian if he was in our world. Speaks very informally.
Economic Background: Very poor but it didn't hinder his life style.
Attitude towards life: He wants to be the freest man in the world. He believes everyone should be able to live how they want without oppression.
Task 2: Write a script for two characters in your game. Include any directorial notes
Script Writing
Okki: (muffled by tears) What is this? Where am I?
Unknown Man: Be still child. You are safe now.
Okki: (Crying) I want to go home.
Unknown Man: You cannot.
Okki: (Shouting) I want to go home!
*Unknown Man stares sadly as Okki continues to cry*
Okki: Where is my mum? Why did she turn into that monster?
*Okki wipes his tears with his left arm*
Okki: And who are you? Why did you save me? (panicking) a-are you going to try eat me t-
*Unknown man interrupts*
Unknown Man: I would do no such thing. I am here to help you.
Okki: Then tell me what is happening.
Unknown Man: I will, but first you must rest.
Okki: What? So you can eat me? I don't want to sle-
*Unknown man waves his hands over Okki's eyes, lulling him into a deep sleep*
Unknown Man: Sleep.
Unknown Man: Sleep and all shall be revealed.
Okki: (Groans)
(Fades into dream sequence revealing the story of the world)
Characters
Okki: 10 year old boy without a right arm. He is very panicked and scared after just barely escaping from death by the hands of a monster in the shape of his mother.
Unknown Man: ? year old man. He is secretly Okki's dad but neither of them has any memory of that. He still has fatherly feelings for Okki but doesn't understand why. He saved Okki from the monster and has taken him back to the safety of his home. He later reveals that he goes by the name Morpheus.
SELF DIRECTED
Script 1 Okki and his mother
*Mother stands at the stove, cooking food on the fire*
Okki: I had a nightmare
Mother: Oh well, are you hungry?
Okki: You don't care what it was about?
Mother: The food smells delicious, I can't wait to eat, (turns and faces Okki) you?
Okki: I'm not hungry.
Mother: Maybe you should go outside and play while I prep for dinner.
Okki: Yeah I will.
Okki: (Thinking) Something is weird about mum...
Okki goes outside and encounters the ghost of a deceased child who warns him of a terrible fate
He runs inside, hides in bed and falls asleep, he awakes to the sound of scraping in the kitchen
Okki: (rubbing eyes) Mum...?
Mother is standing at the stove again, but something seems off, she is slouched in a strange way and the darkness in the kitchen makes it hard to see her.
*Okki approaches her but gets a shiver down his spine*
*Mother turns around and reveals she is holding a kitchen knife in one hand and a cleaver in the other*
Okki begins to realise that his encounter with the ghost was not a nightmare but reality
*Mothers face begins to melt off as she speaks*
Beldam (mother): (voice distorting as she speaks) What's wrong Okki? Having a nightmare?
Okki: (Screams)
Okki falls back onto him butt and shuffles backwards away in fear.
Okki: STAY AWAY
Okki runs away and the Beldam gives chase.
Script 2 Okki and a town NPC
Lost Child: Are you lost too?
Okki: Kinda, but I'm gonna get home, no matter what.
Lost Child: I wanna go home too... but I know I can't...
Okki: Why? Maybe I can help.
Lost Child: The big bad monster came and bad guys took over. Mister shopkeeper saved me from them but I don't remember where it was.
Okki: What kinda place was it?
Lost Child: Errrm, lots of trees everywhere and a biiiiig house in the middle.
Okki: I think I know where you're talking about.
Script 3 Okki and a survivor in the sky dreamworld
Survivor: Finally... I'm safe...
Okki: How long have you been up here?
Survivor: Too long, please help me, please.
Okki: I'll help you but tell me what I need to know.
Survivor: I'll happily tell you anything I know.
Okki: How do I get around here? I don't wanna fall off and die after all.
Survivor: No way... you're gonna explore this place? You're brave....
Survivor: You're going to need these, I'll give them to you since I have no need for them.
Okki acquires the Winged Boots
Survivor: These will make you fly for a while but only between cloud floors, so don't try any free flying or you'll fall and die.
Okki: Alrighty, thanks for the help. Go down and go to the town, You'll be safe there.
Survivor: Ooh Ooh I forgot to say, the boots will allow you to glide for a bit, and if you find any rings of golden cloud then try gliding through them. It'll be sick, trust me.
Okki: I'll keep that in mind.
REFLECTION
In this lecture we learned about writing dialogue in games and stories. First we talked about having a clear description and image of a character and were tasked with taking any character and writing their Childhood, Intelligence, Ethnicity/Accent, Economic Background and Attitude towards life. We then wrote a script between two characters in our games.
I enjoyed this lesson, writing a script of an interaction between two characters in my game premise was fun and I felt like it helped me develop my premise even further.
For the self directed we had to write 3 more scripts for our game premise, I am proud of what I have done and feel like I have developed upon my characters even more and brought them to life even just a little bit.
I am proud of my work today and will continue to carry on with character personalities I have given them in their scripts.
To conclude, I am extremely happy with my work this lesson, I have learned how to write scripts and directorial notes to go along with them.
In the future, I will continue to write scripts the way I did today as I feel that I did very well with it. I feel like I have written my scripts in a way that suits me.
