TASK: Redesign popular game maps in a different environment
Okami in a pirate world:
To make this map I wanted to make the island look more realistic, without the clearly hand-drawn and human calculated edges. So in order to make my island I decided to use rice, I wanted to rely on the random and uncalculated nature of it. I poured rice onto my page and then sketched around it to make the outline of my islands, I then designed the inside as it would be in Okami, I put a save point and a torii gate and a sapling plant, as well as a path going through the island and a line to show the beach/lower area of the island.
SELF-DIRECTED
I based the world map of my game world on sketches I had previously done in lesson, while making my map I wanted to keep to the whimsical fantastical but creepy nature of my game idea by putting little symbols and embelishments around my map. Also, it is a top down map but I decided to draw some features onto the map as when I imagine it, I would like to imagine it as a hand drawn map similar to a pirate map where they draw on features of the map where they are. For example I have drawn a giant tower on the map, where the tower of magic is, it would not look like that from a top down view but I like the way it looks.
REFLECTION
In this lecture we learned about the many different ways maps can exist in games. There are different ways they can exist in games the main two being diagetically, inside the game world, and non-diagetically, outside the game world and only viewable by the player. After learning about the different types of maps we were then tasked with redesigning maps from existing games in a new environment. For this task I chose to draw an Okami map in a pirate world. After that we were tasked with drawing out game world on a map.
I was very happy with this lesson as I have always enjoyed drawing maps, I think that the maps I drew were they well planned and drawn. I had already previously drawn out my game world as a map so I used that as reference and was able to improve it's detail.
This lecture went very well for me and I was able to create my maps to the best of my ability in the lecture.
The lecture was helpful as it taught me about diagetical and non-diagetical maps, I believe this has broadened my horizons on using maps in games, allowing for the player to determine where they are for themselves using a map in game is a smart idea that is good for encouraging the players to work out the layout of the map as well as for possibly being able to use it in puzzle making.
To conclude, I believe that I could keep in mind the uses of diagetical maps and possibly use them for a level in my game premise. I am also happy with the maps I made.
In the future, I will think of a way to have a diagetical map in my game premise.
