In this lecture we learned about useful vocabulary to consider when writing such as 'want, but' (used when considering conflict). An example of this is Shrek WANTS to live in peace BUT in order to live in peace he has to save the princess for a tyrant lord.
We were tasked with writing a 4 slide story based around a single picture of a woman sitting in a chair whilst using 'want, but'.
From this image, I decided to make a comedy/horror story using her as the plot element instead of the main character.
I planned the story by writing out what would happen on each slide before drawing the storyboard.
After that lecture, we were tasked with writing out our game premise in 50-70 words. Keeping that in mind, I decided to write my game premise as if it were a storybook/opening cutscene to a game.
Story Sequence
1. Once upon a time, in a realm far beyond...
2. There exists a world of myriad dreams.
3. Legends tell of great beings with the power to manipulate the very fabric of reality,
4. They called these beings the 'Lucid', and among all dreamers, they held the most power.
5. But on the night of the full moon, a great beast fell from its surface bringing with it... FEAR.
6. Using its terrifying strength it rendered the Lucid powerless, tearing away their very hopes and dreams in crystalline form.
7. With the world plunged into terror, it awaits the arrival of the Last Lucid...
8. But alas... So does the beast...
The premise of my game is an action-adventure platformer based on dreams. The MC is trapped in a dream world that has been corrupted by fear. In order to escape the dream he has to defeat the nightmares terrorizing the world. Each nightmare symbolizes a different fear. Then the MC take on the beast that put the world into darkness. As you defeat fears your character gets more and more courageous. As you clear worlds, more and more dreamers will be freed and you will gain more strength against fear. The world of dreams is a realm of the dead.
REFLECTION
For most of the lecture we laid down the foundations for what we would be doing in future lectures. We went over the module and the brief and began learning the basics of game story writing.
I was very happy with what I did during the lecture. I feel that I have started to lay down the foundations for a story.
I could improve my work by being more professional in my presentation of the work I made during the lecture, I could improve the language and vocabulary.
I learned about conflict and alot of the tropes that are involved in writing stories. For example 'want, but' which can be applied to so many different stories as it is a core concept in conflict which is required for stories.
To conclude, I am very happy with the progress of my work. I have learned about how to make a structured layout in more detail. I think I could have created a story that was more dramatic or a plot that was easier to understand.
In the future, I will keep in mind the level of professionalism that is required for my work and I will work towards that standard.
